Airforce vet Gregg Popovich officially announced his retirement as head coach of the San Antonio Spurs, concluding a remarkable tenure that spanned nearly three decades and solidifying his legacy as one of the most significant figures in the NBA's history.

A 76-year-old Hall of Famer, renowned for leading the franchise to five championships and holding the record for the most coaching wins in league history, will continue his association with the organization as team president.

In a recent statement, Popovich announced, “While my love and passion for the game remain, I’ve decided it’s time to step away as head coach.” The retirement marks the conclusion of a 29-year coaching career that commenced in 1996, during which he played a pivotal role in establishing the Spurs as a benchmark of enduring success.

Popovich faced significant challenges during the 2024–25 season, as he was sidelined for a majority of the year following a stroke in November. Despite his health struggles, he continued to play a role behind the scenes.

Mitch Johnson, the assistant coach for the last 77 games, has been appointed the new head coach.

Gregg Popovich boasts an impressive coaching résumé, featuring 1,422 regular-season wins, 170 playoff victories, three Coach of the Year awards, and a gold medal with Team USA at the Tokyo Olympics. He played a pivotal role in the careers of Hall of Famers, including Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili, and David Robinson.

He made headlines by hiring Becky Hammon, marking a significant milestone as the NBA’s first female full-time assistant coach.

Outside the basketball court, Popovich garnered a reputation for his stern demeanor, sharp wit, and fervent commitment to social and political causes. “The remarkable influence of Coach Pop on our family, the city of San Antonio, the Spurs organization, and the sport of basketball is significant,” stated Spurs managing partner Peter J. Holt.

Popovich's exit marks a significant turning point for the Spurs as they focus on rebuilding the team around rising star Victor Wembanyama, signaling the dawn of a new era for the franchise. Popovich's legacy is poised to be characterized not solely by his victories but also by the connections he fostered and the high standard of excellence he established.

“There is no one out there like Pop,” stated Steve Kerr of the Golden State Warriors. “He is truly one of a kind.”
