The U.S. Army has initiated an investigation following the emergence of a video that depicts soldiers undergoing hazing beneath a politically themed “Ultra MAGA” banner, which seemingly contravenes military regulations that forbid partisan conduct while in uniform or on government premises.
A TikTok video shared by Staff Sgt. Thomas Mitchell on Friday showcases Army trainees engaged in push-ups and burpees while clad in full body armor, all under a flag that proclaims, “This Is Ultra MAGA Country.” Although the initial post was swiftly taken down, Mitchell subsequently shared a follow-up video featuring the same group in the same environment, but this time without the flag. The phrase is “Shed some tears over it.”
Army spokesperson Jennifer Gunn released a statement denouncing the presence of partisan materials within military settings. “The U.S. Army operates without political bias,” she stated. “The display of partisan political materials in government facilities, including training areas, is not allowed according to Army regulation.” We will investigate this issue and address it in accordance with our established guidelines to ensure adherence to conduct standards and maintain an environment free from political interference.
According to the policy set forth by the Department of Defense, service members are prohibited from participating in partisan political activities while in uniform or utilizing government resources and property. The incorporation of a campaign-related slogan and visuals in an official training setting prompts inquiries regarding potential regulatory breaches as well as issues related to command climate and discipline.
There is uncertainty surrounding whether Mitchell will encounter any disciplinary measures.
As of Monday, the Army has yet to provide further information about the investigation's status or if the trainees involved experienced any effects beyond what was shown in the video.
The event has raised significant alarm regarding the involvement of politics within the military and the application of established regulations designed to maintain its impartial character.
