The U.S. Army is reshaping its role in the Indo-Pacific by establishing two new Multi-Domain Commands (MDCs) to manage specialized Multi-Domain Task Forces (MDTFs) designed to counter China's military ambitions.
According to Army Pacific Commander Gen. Ronald Clark in an interview with Defense News, “the latest directives, integral to the Army’s extensive transformation effort, will enhance command authority for MDTFs functioning across land, air, sea, space, and cyberspace.” The inaugural MDTF in the Pacific was established at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in 2018, followed by the formation of additional MDTFs in Europe in 2021 and in Hawaii in 2022.
By 2028, there will be five MDTFs operational, which will include two additional units concentrating on the Pacific region and a swiftly deployable team from Fort Bragg, North Carolina. The task forces showcase cutting-edge weaponry, including the Precision Strike Missile and Long-Range Hypersonic Weapon, while also incorporating cyber, space, and electronic warfare capabilities.
Clark highlighted the necessity for updated command frameworks, stating that MDTFs need “two-star level headquarters” to effectively manage their intricate, theater-wide operations.
The Army's budget for fiscal 2026 allocates resources for the establishment of these new commands. The first and third MDTFs will be integrated into the Multi-Domain Command — Pacific, in conjunction with the 7th Infantry Division. The fourth MDTF will function under Multi-Domain Command — Japan, in collaboration with the U.S. Army Japan headquarters.
The Army attributes the success of MDTFs to their role in enhancing regional deterrence, highlighting the recent deployment of mid-range missiles in the Philippines, which has elicited a significant response from China.
Gen. Clark emphasized that the improved command structure will enable MDTFs to efficiently assist in joint operations and adapt to changing threats in the Indo-Pacific, representing a notable shift in the U.S. military's stance in the region.
