U.S. military forces conducted a raid in Syria on Friday, resulting in the death of a senior Islamic State (ISIS) leader along with his two adult sons, as confirmed by U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) in a statement.
Dhiya’ Zawba Muslih al-Hardani, identified as a prominent member of ISIS, was eliminated in a targeted operation along with his sons, Abdallah Dhiya al-Hardani and Abd al-Rahman Dhiya Zawba al-Hardani. CENTCOM officials declared that the individuals posed a threat to both the U.S. and Coalition Forces, as well as the recently established Syrian Government.
Although the exact positions of the three individuals within ISIS remain undisclosed, U.S. military officials emphasized their persistent dedication to dismantling the organization's leadership.
“Our commitment to tracking down ISIS terrorists in every corner of the globe remains unwavering,” stated Army Gen. Michael Erik Kurilla, CENTCOM commander. “Those involved with ISIS are not secure in their resting places, their operational zones, or their hiding spots.”
The operation signifies an ongoing commitment by the U.S. to diminish ISIS’s operational strength in Syria and Iraq. Even though the terrorist organization lost its last territorial stronghold in Syria in 2019, sleeper cells and high-ranking individuals continue to operate in the area.
Friday’s operation takes place against a backdrop of changing circumstances in Syria, following the removal of former dictator Bashar al-Assad last December. The United States has initiated discussions with Syria's newly established government led by Ahmed al-Sharaa, a former rebel leader previously associated with al-Qaeda during the civil conflict.
In April, the Pentagon revealed intentions to cut its presence in Syria by 50%, with 1,000 U.S. troops scheduled to pull out in the upcoming months. Even with the reduction, CENTCOM highlighted that operations aimed at combating terrorism will persist in collaboration with regional partners.
The recent strike highlights the ongoing danger posed by ISIS and underscores the U.S. military's persistent role in combating extremism in the Middle East.
