On Friday, the Navy launched its inaugural information warfare squadron, marking the establishment of a new operational unit aimed at integrating cyber, intelligence, and electronic warfare capabilities to bolster a carrier strike group.

On December 5, a ceremony in Norfolk marked the establishment of Information Warfare Squadron Two, as reported by a Navy announcement released through the Defense Visual Information Distribution Service. The launch marks the start of a 48-month pilot initiative to enhance the integration of the service's expanding information warfare mission.

In June, the Fleet Commanders’ Readiness Council approved a program to consolidate what senior leaders have characterized as “disparate” elements of information warfare. Vice Adm. Mike Vernazza, commander of Naval Information Forces, stated that the new structure aims to establish a “unified force” designed to enhance the effectiveness of deployed carrier strike groups.

The squadron is set to operate under a newly established chain of command, integrating personnel from carrier strike groups, Navy Cyber Defense Operations Command, Navy Information Operations Command, Strike Group Oceanography Teams, and associated units. The squadron's commander, Capt. Jon O'Connor, articulated the mission in a straightforward manner, emphasizing that it is fundamentally about warfighting.

O'Connor stated, "IWRON-2 will not only meet but exceed the standards of excellence because we must." “Our mission requires it.” Our mission is to enhance the preparedness, effectiveness, and resilience of our Carrier Strike Groups by integrating cutting-edge IW capabilities.

The squadron marks a groundbreaking development, uniquely numbered to correspond with the carrier strike group it is set to support. A second information warfare squadron is anticipated to be established on the West Coast in 2025.

Although Naval Information Forces has yet to provide specific staffing details, the Naval Intelligence Professionals, which comprises both active-duty members and veterans, estimates that each squadron will include approximately 70 sailors.

The Navy's decision aligns with the ongoing transformation across all military branches regarding their information and electronic warfare frameworks. Earlier this year, the Army took the significant step of disbanding the long-established 1st Information Operations Command. To counter disinformation and enhance influence operations, the Army formed Theater Information Advantage Detachments in its place.

The Army has initiated the activation of new electromagnetic warfare companies, starting with a unit in the Georgia National Guard.

The Navy's pilot program aims to assess the effectiveness of consolidated teams in crafting more agile doctrine and enhancing the protection of carrier strike groups as they navigate increasingly contested information environments.
