Authorities confirmed Friday that the individual taken into custody for the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk had previously voiced dissent regarding the political figure's perspectives before the tragic incident.
On Wednesday, during a speech at Utah Valley University, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson reportedly shot Kirk. Political motives are driving the recent incident, which has ignited widespread public anger. “Ladies and gentlemen, we got him,” Utah Governor Spencer Cox declared at a press conference following the arrest, with President Donald Trump also affirming the development on Fox News.
Officials report that Robinson had become more politically engaged in the months leading up to the event, bringing up Kirk’s forthcoming trip to Utah during a family meal.
Findings at the crime scene, such as markings on bullet casings and communications on the Discord app, have prompted investigators to conclude that Robinson was the sole actor. "We are confident that no other individuals are involved," Cox said, emphasizing the suspect's unique role in the incident.
Officials disclosed that Robinson's father identified him in images shared by the FBI and urged him to turn himself in, which he ultimately did after a period of hesitation.
Disturbing footage, now circulating on the internet, captures the incident in full view of the public. The video captures Kirk discussing gun violence when, suddenly, a gunshot rings out, hitting him in the neck. The crowd erupts in panic as Kirk falls to the ground, blood pooling around him, while the assailant retreats into the distance. “This was a deliberate assault,” stated FBI agent Robert Bohls.
Kirk, a notable figure in conservative circles and co-founder of Turning Point USA, gained recognition for his outspoken views on social matters and his initiatives to engage young Republican voters.
Trump, together with Democratic leaders, denounced the violence and committed to honoring Kirk with the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
