On Saturday, President Donald Trump issued an order for 2,000 National Guard troops to be deployed to California, a move prompted by the rising tensions surrounding protests that have emerged in the wake of federal immigration raids throughout Los Angeles County.

A presidential memorandum has confirmed that the deployment, sanctioned under Title 10, will extend for a minimum of 60 days. This directive empowers Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to utilize additional active-duty troops if deemed necessary. The order referenced a series of violent and disorderly incidents linked to operations conducted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

On Sunday morning, troops from the California National Guard’s 79th Infantry Brigade Combat Team made their arrival in Los Angeles County. U.S. Northern Command has confirmed that troops are currently deployed near critical protest locations, including the Edward R. Roybal Federal Building and Paramount, where tensions have escalated significantly.

Protests broke out on Friday, June 6, following coordinated raids by ICE and FBI agents at Home Depots, retail establishments in Downtown LA, and federal check-in sites, leading to several arrests. Activists, union members, and community groups swiftly organized in response to demonstrations, encountering tear gas and various crowd-control measures.

California Governor Gavin Newsom has issued a public condemnation of the deployment, describing it as “purposefully inflammatory and will only escalate tensions.”

The deployment of National Guard troops to the city under presidential authority represents a significant moment, as it is the first occurrence since the 1992 Los Angeles riots.

In a significant decision, Trump opted not to invoke the Insurrection Act, choosing instead to utilize Title 10 authority to federalize the National Guard.

Protests are anticipated to persist, with immigration advocates condemning the raids and the increasing federal presence in local communities.
