Matt Maasdam, a retired Navy SEAL and former military aide to President Barack Obama, is gearing up for a possible congressional run in Michigan’s 7th District, which freshman Republican Rep. Tom Barrett currently represents.

Maasdam, 50, from Ann Arbor, has initiated discussions with prominent Democratic figures in both Michigan and Washington, D.C. This includes engagements with the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and House Majority PAC, as reported by a Democratic source knowledgeable about his efforts.

Maasdam's biography includes notable service in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Africa, alongside a significant role in carrying the "nuclear football" for President Obama in 2010. This background presents a compelling counter-narrative to Barrett, who is recognized as a former Army helicopter pilot and Iraq veteran. Emma Grundhauser, who previously managed Rep. Elissa Slotkin’s 2022 campaign, is providing advice to him.

“Matt has deep roots in Michigan and a remarkable record of service,” stated Austin Cook, a former adviser to Slotkin. “In a district such as the 7th, his biography stands out as exceptionally compelling.”

In a closely contested race in 2024, Barrett emerged victorious over Democrat Curtis Hertel, winning by a margin of less than four points. As he prepares for his re-election campaign, Barrett has already amassed more than $900,000 in fundraising efforts. The team highlights bipartisan achievements, showcasing successful legislation and effective constituent services.

State Senator Sarah Anthony, former House Minority Leader Donna Lasinski, and former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Bridget Brink are the Democrats reportedly considering a potential candidacy.

Maasdam earned degrees from the University of Michigan and Harvard Kennedy School. Following a distinguished career in the military and public service, he transitioned to the private sector and established several companies.
