While returning home from work on August 30, 2023, Sgt. 1st Class Robert Cruz observed a shocking four-vehicle collision take place on a highway in Colorado. Shortly thereafter, the soldier from the Colorado Army National Guard took a courageous step to save another individual. This heroic deed led to him receiving the esteemed Soldier’s Medal on July 9, 2025.
A U.S. Army release reports that Cruz intervened after witnessing a collision involving two vehicles, followed by a third vehicle flipping multiple times into oncoming traffic and crashing into a fourth car. A car that had flipped over subsequently erupted in flames.
Cruz sprinted towards the blazing wreckage without a moment's pause. Inside, he discovered the driver unresponsive and bleeding. Cruz entered the vehicle, released the man from his restraints, and swiftly brought him to safety just as the flames began to escalate.
Upon reviving the driver, Cruz discovered the possibility of a child being in the vehicle. He hurried back to investigate, only to find an unoccupied child seat. He stayed with the injured man until help arrived.
“Sgt. 1st Class Cruz’s courageous act… reflects the esteemed values of the U.S. Army,” Clellan stated. “I take great pride in serving alongside Robert in the Colorado Army National Guard.”
During a ceremony held in Centennial, Colorado, Maj. Gen. Laura Clellan, the Adjutant General of Colorado, awarded Cruz with the Soldier’s Medal.
