In a notable departure from established norms, President Donald Trump has enacted an executive order designating himself as the chair of a newly formed federal task force for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, indicating a significantly more engaged presidential involvement in the event compared to previous administrations. Trump portrayed the Olympics as a prime opportunity to highlight American exceptionalism and committed to ensuring top-notch security, even considering the deployment of the National Guard or military forces if needed.

“We are committed to taking all necessary measures to ensure the safety of the Olympics,” Trump stated at a press conference held at the White House, surrounded by banners that combined the presidential seal with the LA28 logo. “This is set to be extremely secure.” “If it becomes necessary to deploy the military, we will do so.”

A newly established task force, led by Vice President JD Vance, is set to manage security, transportation, visa processing, and inter-agency coordination, collaborating closely with state and local officials. The federal government's longstanding support for Olympic security is now under scrutiny due to Trump's direct involvement, particularly in light of rising tensions with city leaders in Los Angeles, prompting both political and logistical concerns.

Trump's recent action comes after his contentious decision in June to send military forces to Los Angeles to address immigration enforcement. This move faced intense criticism from Mayor Karen Bass. In a statement made on Tuesday, Trump aimed at Bass, labeling her as “not very competent,” which adds to the existing tension between federal and city officials.

City officials have expressed concerns that Trump’s immigration policies may hinder international involvement by complicating visa approvals for athletes, coaches, and media personnel. The task force, operating under the Department of Homeland Security, will also assume these responsibilities.

Casey Wasserman, chair of LA28, commended Trump's backing and guidance during the event. “The establishment of this task force has opened the door to enhance our planning,” Wasserman stated, even with his enduring connections to Democratic political figures.

Los Angeles is actively preparing to enhance city services, including police, sanitation, and emergency response, in anticipation of the Games and the upcoming Paralympics. According to a 2021 agreement, LA28 is required to compensate the city for services that exceed typical daily operations.

Although military assistance has occurred before in the context of the Olympics, Trump's comments and hands-on involvement in planning signify a notable shift in how a sitting president engages with Olympic preparations.
