Frank S. Wright experienced some of the most intense battles of World War II, enlisting in the Marine Corps at the age of 16 and serving as a Marine Raider on Guadalcanal, Guam, and Iwo Jima. As he gets ready to mark his 100th birthday on July 5, Wright has a heartfelt yet straightforward wish: he hopes to collect 100,000 birthday cards.

“I want the children to learn more about World War II,” Wright stated, noting that the cards could inspire teachers to discuss the war with their students.

Wright’s friend and fellow Marine, retired Gunnery Sgt. Marvin Hernandez Garcia has been instrumental in raising awareness by sharing a video of Wright’s request across social media platforms. As of Tuesday, Wright had received 422 cards, which is still short of his goal, but there’s still time to achieve it.

Wright’s courageous service encompasses being bayoneted on Guam and shot on Iwo Jima, which earned him multiple medals, including the Purple Heart with two stars. Marine Corps Commandant Gen. Eric Smith has recommended that Wright receive an honorary promotion to sergeant, acknowledging his bravery and dedication to service. Anyone wishing to send Wright a card can mail it to:
