Two military prisoners were hurt when someone tried to break out of the U.S. Disciplinary Barracks in Fort Leavenworth.
One of the prisoners got caught in razor-sharp concertina wire that was laid on top of a fence. A spokesperson for the U.S. Army Combined Arms Center, Lt. Col. Bryen Freigo, said that during an incident on April 29, correctional officers stepped in and stopped inmates from fleeing a Kansas military facility.
A striking picture shared on social media by the U.S. Army WTF! Moments shows a tense scene: troops are trying to free a man who is stuck in barbed wire. Task & Purpose has confirmed that the picture is real, but Army officials have clarified that the person in the image is not the former Green Beret who has been talked about in several online talks.
Freigo said that the prisoners got medical care for their wounds before being sent back to jail. He said the public's safety stayed intact during the whole thing, and a probe is now going on. According to standard Army practice, the military does not share information about specific prisoners.
The U.S. Disciplinary Barracks is the military's only maximum-security prison. It houses service members who have been found guilty of the worst breaches of the Uniform Code of Military Justice. Escape efforts are rare because strict security rules usually stop people from leaving.
The prison authorities have not yet given more information about how the prisoners were able to get to the fence or whether they will face more legal consequences for their failed escape attempt.
A picture that went viral got a lot of attention, showing how hard it is for military jails to keep track of dangerous prisoners and make sure security rules are followed. The Army has confirmed that the problem is being looked into right now.
