In a groundbreaking development for the U.S. Army, the Georgia National Guard has mobilized the 111th Electromagnetic Warfare Company, an advanced intelligence unit dedicated exclusively to operations involving battlefield electromagnetic and cyber capabilities.

Established within the 221st Intelligence and Electronic Warfare Battalion, the mission of the 111th signifies a notable transition from counterinsurgency tactics to engaging in near-peer electronic warfare.

The organization’s four units will focus on three primary roles: intercepting adversary communications, executing cyber offensives, and neutralizing enemy drones.

Capt. Caleb Rogers, the first commander of the unit, stated that the company will provide support and protection for American forces while actively engaging enemy networks. The launch addresses contemporary challenges posed by advanced adversaries such as China and Russia on the battlefield.

Lt. Col. Luke Gurley, commander of the 221st, stated that this initiative is part of a broader modernization strategy across the Army, with plans for similar units in other National Guard battalions throughout the country—including those located in Texas, which plays a crucial role in military cyber readiness.

“As doctrine evolves, these units will be at the forefront of future warfare,” stated Rogers, highlighting their partnership with the Army Cyber Center of Excellence located at Fort Eisenhower.

The involvement of Texas in military cyber and intelligence operations is anticipated to increase as the National Guard adopts the model of the 111th, with potential expansions to locations such as Fort Cavazos (formerly Fort Hood) and Camp Mabry in Austin.

The 111th is actively developing training programs in collaboration with various Army commands.
